Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThere’s a version of this story that gets told every March in Gustavia, usually over drinks, usually by someone who’s heard it a dozen times before and still enjoys telling it. In August 1986, a group of yacht owners gathered in Nantucket for Nelson Doubleday’s birthday. Talk turned, as it does among sailors, to whose boat was actually fastest. Rather than argue about it, they raced — a fifteen-mile dash around Nantucket Sound, decided the next morning. There was no trophy prepared, so someone found a spare bucket lying around. It became the prize.
Nine years later, the event moved to St Barths, and it’s been held here every March since. The name stuck too — everyone still calls it the Bucket.
What actually makes it different
Most superyacht events these days come with title sponsors, hospitality tents and a schedule built around brand activations. The Bucket has none of that, deliberately. It’s invitation-only, there’s no prize money, and the trophy is still, in spirit, a bucket. The 40-plus sailing superyachts that gather in Gustavia each year — genuinely among the most striking fleets assembled anywhere in the world — are there because their owners want to race, not because a marketing department decided they should be.
That informality shapes the whole week. Racing happens off the coast each morning, but the real character of the event is onshore: welcome parties, daily awards presentations at the Bucket Bar, and a harbor that fills with tenders ferrying crews and owners between yachts and the quay. Gustavia itself, never a large town, becomes almost unrecognizable for the week — every berth taken, every restaurant booked, every villa above the harbor rented months in advance.
Starting with the 2027 edition, the regatta is also expanding to a four-race series run Thursday through Sunday, up from the traditional three days — a response, organizers have said, to trade winds becoming less predictable in recent seasons, and a sign the event is still evolving after four decades rather than simply repeating itself.
Next edition
The 2027 St Barths Bucket Regatta runs 17–21 March 2027, the first year of the new four-race format. As with previous editions, expect Gustavia’s marina and the island’s villa inventory to be fully committed well in advance of race week itself.
Chartering for Bucket week
If watching the Bucket from the water is the goal rather than racing in it, the honest advice is the same we give for New Year’s Eve in St Barts: book earlier than feels necessary. Bucket week behaves like a second high season on an island that barely has room for one. Berths in Gustavia harbor are effectively spoken for by competing yachts, so a charter yacht watching from anchor, with easy tender access to the harbourfront for the evening parties, tends to be the more realistic plan than trying to secure a berth inside the harbor itself.
If St Barts over the holidays is also on your radar, our guide on when to book a St Barts charter for Christmas and New Year covers the same booking logic for the island’s other major pinch point in the calendar — between the two, St Barts effectively has two lead times to plan around each year, not one.

Your Boat Holiday is a MYBA member broker, and Giulia Di Leo, our CEO, attends several of the Mediterranean and Caribbean’s leading boat shows and regattas every year to meet crews and understand exactly how weeks like this one actually run on the water.
“The Bucket is one of the few events left where the yachts themselves are still the entire point,” says Giulia. “No sponsors, no hospitality decks built for spectators — just genuinely serious sailing yachts racing because their owners want to. For guests who want to experience that atmosphere without racing themselves, the trick is booking early enough to actually be there, not scrambling for whatever’s left in February.”
