The unpalatable combination of a second-in-MLB payroll ($380 million), a record only two games better than MLB’s worst after the Mets’ 4-3 defeat to the Dodgers Saturday night plus inconsistent prospect performances and an unusually weak list of available free agents means a quick recovery to competitiveness won’t be easy. They might have to bat close to 1.000 in their decisions to do it by next season, assuming there is a next season.

Mets owner Steve Cohen told us on our Post podcast “The Show” that he’s “worried,” and I see why.
