Happy 59th birthday to five-time MLB All-Star, one-time Silver Slugger, Home Run Derby champion and Arizona Diamondbacks World Series walk-off hero, Luis Gonzalez!

Gonzalez was a fourth-round MLB Draft pick in 1988 by the Houston Astros, and by 1990 the University of South Alabama product was making his Big League debut. He’d play his first five+ seasons with Houston before getting traded to the Chicago Cubs during the 1995 season before returning to Houston in 1997. 

After eight seasons of being a serviceable MLB left fielder, Gonzalez finally broke out for his first All-Star campaign in 1999 with Arizona. He led the National League with 206 hits that season, posting career-highs in home runs (26), doubles (45) and RBI (111). 

2001 was a dream campaign for Gonzalez, who not only hit a (still-standing) D-Backs single-season record 57 homers, drive in 142 runs, won the Home Run Derby and delivered a walk-off single against Mariano Rivera and the New York Yankees to win the franchise's only World Series title. 

Gonzalez would earn three more All-Star nods with Arizona after the 2001 season, departing the club in 2006 and spending time with the Dodgers and Marlins before calling it a career after the 2008 season. Gonzalez retired with 354 home runs, 1,439 RBI and 2,591 hits in his 19-year Big League career, and his No. 20 was retired by the D-Backs in 2010.
