On the face of it, Tottenham's reported interest in Jules Koundé is one of the more surprising links of the summer.

Spurs are already well-equipped at right-back, with Pedro Porro poised to be a key player for Roberto De Zerbi next season, while Djed Spence has just enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign with England.

With both players under contract and still firmly in the manager's plans as things stand, investing in another specialist right-back would appear difficult to justify.

However, Koundé is far more than simply a right-back.

The France international has spent much of the last three seasons playing on the right side of Barcelona's defence, but he first established himself as one of Europe's elite young centre-backs with Bordeaux before earning a £21m million move to Sevilla in 2019.

In Andalusia, he rapidly became one of La Liga's outstanding defenders.

Across three seasons, he made more than 130 appearances, helped Sevilla win the Europa League in 2020 and attracted serious interest from several Premier League clubs.

Chelsea came closest to signing him in both 2021 and 2022, with Thomas Tuchel identifying him as his priority defensive target, before Barcelona ultimately completed a deal worth around £43m million in the summer of 2022.

That decision has proved an excellent one for the Catalan club.

Koundé has adapted impressively to right-back, becoming one of Barca's most consistent performers. Under Hansi Flick, he developed into an almost undroppable member of the starting eleven, with his consistency also carrying into the 2026 World Cup, where he again established himself as France's first-choice right-back.

The 27-year-old, who Flick said has a 'top-notch' mentality, is entering what should be the peak years of his career, and few defenders currently available can genuinely perform at an elite level as both a centre-back and right-back, making his versatility one of his greatest strengths.

That flexibility could somewhat explain Tottenham's thinking.

Cristian Romero continues to attract strong interest from Inter Milan, while De Zerbi has consistently preferred defenders capable of stepping into midfield with the ball.

Koundé's profile would allow Tottenham to strengthen two positions simultaneously, even if his arrival would initially create fierce competition with Porro and Spence.

Even so, it remains an unusual link, given they signed both Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke earlier this summer as well, but nevertheless, the Lilywhites are said to be keen on Kounde.

Tottenham considering £56 million bid for Jules Koundé

According to journalist Sébastien Vidal, Spurs are preparing to test Barcelona's resolve.

Vidal claims Tottenham are considering an offer worth around £56 million for the French defender because of his versatility and experience at the highest level.

However, the report also makes clear that Barcelona regard Koundé as an essential member of Flick's squad, while the player himself has no desire to leave Catalonia.

No official bid has yet been submitted, and that final point is perhaps the most significant.

Barca are not actively looking to sell one of their most reliable defenders, and Koundé has repeatedly spoken about his happiness at the club.

Unless either stance changes dramatically, Tottenham would almost certainly need more than a sizeable transfer fee to persuade Barcelona even to enter negotiations.

For now, turning Spurs' reported admiration into an actual transfer looks considerably complicated.
