Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed their UEFA Champions League squad for the upcoming group stages of the competition, and Mathys Tel has been left out.

The player was on loan at Tottenham last season, and they made the move permanent during the summer transfer window. He would have expected to play a key role this season, but he has been left out of the squad for the upcoming European games.

The player has now revealed in an interview that he was disappointed with the choice from the manager. However, he’s looking to stay upbeat about the situation and bounce back strongly.

Tel on Thomas Frank’s decision

Tel revealed (h/t Mirror): “Quite simply, with respect. He called me, he simply told me his choice, and then you could see the list appear on the networks.

“It’s clear that when you’re not on a list, it definitely hurts, but I’m someone who stays pretty positive, no matter the situation, because I think I’ve worked a lot on the mental aspect, so today it’s definitely a disappointment, I would have liked to be there. But the coach’s choice is the coach’s choice, we can only respect it and we’re going to work to come back in the best possible way.”

There is no doubt that the French International is a talented player with a bright future. However, he has not been able to make a defining impact at Tottenham yet. He will certainly hope to make his mark at the London club now that his long-term future has been sorted. He will look to force his way into Thomas Frank’s plans in the coming months.

It remains to be seen whether he can convince the newly appointed Tottenham manager that he deserves regular opportunities. He will hope to establish himself as a key player for the North London club in the coming months.
