Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe U.S. men's national volleyball team, entering the semifinals at 4-1, faces Mexico (3-1) on August 16 in Morelos, Mexico, with an 8 p.m. local start time (10 p.m. EDT). College players are a notable part of the American roster, including outside hitter Jackson Cryst of Long Beach State and Sterling Foley of USC.
Live stats and a live video stream are available for fans unable to attend in person.
College Talent on the U.S. Roster
Cryst and Foley represent a thread connecting the college game to senior international competition. Long Beach State and USC are perennial men's volleyball programs, and their players earning spots on a Pan American Cup semifinal roster reflects the pipeline from collegiate ranks into national team contention.
The U.S. roster was finalized after a competitive selection process, similar to how the U17 men's program recently filled its 14-man competition squad for the Pan American Cup in Guatemala.
U17 Men Earned Bronze Earlier This Month
The senior semifinal comes just days after the U17 men's program wrapped up its own Pan American Cup campaign. According to the562.org, Millikan High School sophomore Jonah Tuaniga was among the 14 players selected from an initial pool of 26 to represent Team USA at the U17 Pan American Cup in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The U17 squad went 2-1 in preliminary play, defeating Mexico in five sets and sweeping Puerto Rico before dropping a four-set match to Canada. They swept Guatemala in the quarterfinals, then fell to Venezuela in straight sets in the semifinals. USA closed out the tournament with a sweep of Mexico in the bronze-medal match, securing third place.
It marked the second time the U17 men's program competed at that level, and their second consecutive third-place finish. They previously earned bronze at the Continental Championship the year before.
Tuaniga's Path to the National Team
The562.org reported that Tuaniga, a dual-sport athlete who also plays quarterback for Millikan's football team, was announced as a national team member in mid-July. He then completed a week-long training block before earning a spot on the final competition roster that traveled to Guatemala.
With the tournament concluded, Tuaniga returned to Long Beach to prepare for Millikan's football season. The Rams were scheduled to open non-league play against Huntington Beach on August 20.
Semifinals Set the Stage
Back at the senior level, the U.S. men's 4-1 record heading into the semifinals against Mexico indicates a strong pool-play run. Mexico's 3-1 mark sets up a competitive matchup between two of the continent's more established programs.
