Pennsylvania's High Point offered a peak for some whilst others fell into the valley. The lead narratives fashioned around those discussion points and star inside of Lewis Phillips' recapitulation as the 2026 AMA Pro Motocross Championship approaches its first break.

THE HUNTER OR HUNTED?

Familiar territory had been breached after the third round: Jett Lawrence had won four successive motos, seized control of 450MX's red plate and appeared unstoppable (even after a moto where he was disappointed with his 'flow' on an unpopular track). Somehow, though, this still felt different to years past. High Point underlined that it was (and is) different.

Hunter Lawrence appeared to have the measure of Jett twice at stops two and three – a feat that should not have been dismissed. Sacramento's second moto and Colorado's first moto stood as examples of Jett arguably holding Hunter up. Admittedly, he could not capitalize on either chance so that was valuable ammunition for those who believed it was merely the same script as years past.

Quietly, Hunter tussled with bike set-up and track position on the West Coast. "The base set-up was way better," he commented. "What we tried in the week didn't work in qualification one. I was like, 'F**k it. Give me back the base. I know what it does. Give me that back.' They did and I'm happy. The second qualifier was better and the feeling that I had was way better. It was what I had searched for the past two weeks."

The brilliant base was identical to what he won with at AMA Pro Motocross' opener. That invites two questions: Why search for more and did he cost himself incredibly valuable points by doing so? The latter is conjecture. It will remain an unanswered question (and one that could keep him up late at night) whilst the former is easier for him to articulate.

"You get greedy, right? You see some stuff and think 'let's try to fix this and that.' Before you know it, you take a couple of steps and you have lost it." Fortunately, he rediscovered it just in time for Saturday's races. With two holeshots, two moto wins and the fastest lap in each moto, he left little doubt that he was the best athlete. Is that High Point specific or 450MX's current narrative?

Verdict: A rather persuasive case can be made for Hunter.

JETT DISCOVERS DANGER

Whilst their on-track battles have been transient, Jett Lawrence's conflict with Haiden Deegan boiled in the timed qualification portion of Saturday. The actions were elementary; they roosted, taunted and gestured to one another. The drama was near irrelevant come the motos, as the two barely shared a corner and are racing within different parameters (Jett to maintain a series lead and Haiden to learn).

This is a point of contention. We, as humans, have little patience, especially for an instance as anticipated as this. Consequently, every sector and lap time is placed beneath a microscope. The reality is that we are not quite there yet. Deegan is progressing at an impressive rate (Sacramento looks poor now after some massive steps forward the last two weeks) but there is more to do.

"This was an amazing day for me and slowly, but surely, I am closing the gap," he said afterwards. "I was thirty seconds behind Jett in the second moto, then just three today. I'm getting fitter and catching onto what they do. It's only my fourth race and this is becoming a building season; I've raced a 450F against riders like this. So, as much as I want to win, it will take time. I have to be smart."

It's humorous that in all of the Jett and Haiden discussion – and it's understandably a lot – Hunter has been cast aside. Few have entertained him as a threat, despite the fact that he's two points off the red plate and tied for the most wins (moto and overall) in 450MX. Inadvertently, Jett and Haiden have created an environment that Hunter can thrive within.

Verdict: Haiden's building a case for 2026's 450MX title.

PRADO'S POINT TO PROVE 

The aforementioned showdown contains one of the sport's most polarizing athletes. Jorge Prado is in contention for that (undesirable?) position, as fans continue to wrestle with how his Kawasaki stint ended. It is unfortunate, but a byproduct of borders and short attention spans, that he receives no credit for what he did in MXGP. Prado's forced to prove himself like he's a rookie.

Fox Raceway was a brilliant example of what he should be; the three rounds that followed have been disastrous. The redemption arc will not be as sharp as some presumed. The reality that the pathway to 450MX's pinnacle is more drawn-out will be difficult to swallow, but there could be multiple reasons for the delay (all of which could also be irrelevant).

1. Prado did not 'race' last season – he rode. It was not the same as sitting on the sofa with an injury, but cobwebs would have crept in as well as internal doubt. Should overcoming that be a swifter process? "I think I lost a little bit too much last year by not feeling like myself," Prado explained afterwards. "You almost get slower racing at that pace."

2. Technical, methodical and precise. Those words best describe Prado as a rider. Equally, those traits aren't well rewarded in AMA Pro Motocross. Is it possible that it'll never 'click' in the same manner that it did in MXGP? It was a similar tale with Tom Vialle, who didn't hit the expected heights in motocross on the continent. Can Prado twist his skillset to meet American standards?

3. It takes time. It's difficult for some fans to strike 2025 from the record but, for the sake of debate, let's do it. This is the first time that Prado is learning these tracks with confidence and (some) pace. History shows that the first year for imports is steady rather than explosive, but it transforms in the sophomore season. Is it heinous to drop Prado in the same category as Deegan?
