West Ham United have made an approach to sign Sevilla’s Rubén Vargas, with Crysencio Summerville's future at the London Stadium in doubt.

It could be difficult for the Hammers to hold onto their best players this summer, having been relegated from the Premier League, and Mateus Fernandes has already completed a move across the capital to Tottenham Hotspur.

Summerville could be next, with the Netherlands international attracting major interest from the Premier League, and Liverpool are the latest club to have made a serious move.

There is a feeling the Irons could cash-in for as little as £30m this summer, with relegation from the Championship weakening their negotiating position, although they are hoping to receive £50m.

Summerville and Fernandes ranked joint-third in terms of goal involvements for West Ham in the Premier League last season, registering seven each. With talisman Jarrod Bowen also being linked with a move away, it could be vital for Nuno to sign several attackers this summer.

The Hammers should have plenty of money to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming Championship campaign. The sale of Fernandes raised £85m alone, while Summerville could fetch £50m. Vargas, on the other hand is valued at just €15m - €20m (£13m - £17m) by Sevilla.

The 27-year-old only joined Sevilla last summer, and he enjoyed a decent debut campaign in La Liga, picking up three goals and six assists in 24 matches. Since then, he has starred at the World Cup with Switzerland, amassing two goals and one assist in four appearances at left-wing.

The Hammers may choose to sanction Summerville's departure if they sign Vargas. However, with Bowen's future also in doubt, it could make sense to bring in another winger, and Everton's Dwight McNeil recently emerged as a target.

West Ham make approach to sign Ruben Vargas

According to a report from Orgullo Biri (via Sport Witness), West Ham have now made contact regarding a deal for the Sevilla star, as they look to beat Aston Villa to his signature.

Villa are also keen on signing the winger, who could be available for just £13m - £17m, but Unai Emery's side are yet to make any formal moves.

Ruben Vargas could be statement signing in the Championship

In truth, the La Liga star being targeted by a Champions League side in Aston Villa probably shows he is too good to be plying his trade in the second tier.

The Swiss forward is a seasoned international, grabbing 13 goals in 65 caps, while he also picked up 23 goals and 19 assists in 161 matches for former club Augsburg.

That said, West Ham should have plenty of money to spend, with a fire-sale underway, and Vargas, who is averaging 0.72 goals per 90 at the World Cup, is set to be available on the cheap.

As such, should the Hammers be able to convince the ex-Augsburg star to move to the London Stadium, he could be a statement signing.
