Just two days after being designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 24, Jose Urquidy has found a new home with the Chicago White Sox. 

The White Sox have reportedly acquired the low-risk right-handed starter, and in exchange, the Pirates are reportedly acquiring minor league right-hander Felix Doroteo. 

While Urquidy struggled with the Pirates this season, logging an 0-1 record with an 8.53 ERA and 2.68 WHIP across five games, he has pitched well in Triple-A this season with a 3.66 ERA across 83.2 innings with a 22% strikeout rate across 17 starts.

He will likely be a depth piece for the White Sox as a potential back-end starter or as a bulk reliever who could be their next reclamation project.

The White Sox have nothing to lose with Urquidy; they currently lead the AL Central with a 2.5-game cushion thanks to a 12-3 smackdown against the Houston Astros on Sunday. Munetaka Murakami drove in six runs and blasted two home runs on his bobblehead day.

Jose Urquidy's past success could make him a potential reclamation project for White Sox

If the White Sox can help Urquidy recover past form by providing a low-pressure environment with the opportunity to rebuild value following Tommy John surgery in 2025, he could be a solid reclamation project. 

Urquidy has previous success pitching with the Astros from 2019-2023. In the 2019 World Series, he delivered five shutout innings in Game 4 against the Washington Nationals. 

In the 2021 World Series, he earned the win in Game 2 by holding the Atlanta Braves to one run across five innings. He also set career highs with 13 regular-season wins and recorded a 3.94 ERA across 28 starts in contributing to the Astros' 2022 World Series title run.
