Glasgow Rangers knew at the end of last season that they would need to strengthen their squad with a batch of new signings in the summer transfer window.

Danny Rohl led the team to a third place finish in the Scottish Premiership in the 2025/26 campaign, and Derek McInnes came through the door knowing that there was plenty of work to do.

The likes of Cammy Devlin, Dan Neil, Ben Godfrey, Ivor Pandur, Lawrence Shankland, Vanja Dragojevic and Ross McCrorie have already been brought in to bolster the squad.

Tromso central midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl has also emerged as a potential signing for the Scottish giants, as they battle with Championship side Cardiff City for his signature.

Whilst the 20-year-old star is an exciting talent, given his return of seven goals in 14 league games in 2026, he may not be needed at Ibrox with the depth that they already have in his position.

McInnes typically deployed a 4-4-2 or a 4-4-1-1 formation during his time at Hearts in the Premiership last season, which suggests that there will only be two central midfield spots up for grabs at Ibrox next term.

The Gers already have nine first-team options for those two midfield positions in the squad, having signed three already this summer, which is why it may not make sense to splash the cash on Hjerto-Dahl.

Even if Nicolas Raskin, who has been linked with an exit from Ibrox, moves on from the club this summer, the Light Blues would still have eight players to compete for a central midfield spot.

The Scottish giants should, therefore, look to other positions to reinforce their squad in the coming weeks, as they already have plenty of different options for McInnes to pick from in the middle of the park.

Rangers told price to land better signing than Jens Hjerto-Dahl

Instead of using funds to prise Hjerto-Dahl away from Tromso in the coming weeks, the Scottish manager should push to bring in a new forward.

According to Ibrox News, Glasgow Rangers have set the wheels in motion to secure a deal to sign Besiktas forward Vaclav Cerny in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that the Turkish giants could be set to cash in on the forward if they can get a deal for former Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah over the line in the coming days.

It adds that a bid of up to £8.5m would be enough to see an offer accepted for the Czechia international, who could leave Besiktas after just one season with the Super Lig side.

With this latest update in mind, McInnes should urge the club to direct funds towards a big-money deal for Cerny rather than Hjerto-Dahl, as he would be a far better signing for the Gers.

Whilst Rangers have brilliant depth in the central midfield positions, there is a lack of talent on the right wing after Mikey Moore and Andreas Skov Olsen left at the end of last season.

Only one of the club's wingers scored more than three goals in the Premiership last season, and that was a left-winger who has since left after his loan expired.

Oliver Antman is the only natural right-sided winger in the first-team squad and he ended the 2025/26 campaign with one goal in 16 league appearances for the Light Blues.

Rangers lacked a right winger who could score and create goals on a regular basis, which is why Cerny would be such an important addition to McInnes' squad.

During his time on loan from Wolfsburg in the 2024/25 campaign, the Czechia international scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 33 appearances in the Premiership, whilst creating 2.5 chances per game for his teammates.

No Rangers midfielder or winger hit double figures for goals or averaged 2.5 key passes per game in the Premiership last term, which suggests that Cerny would return to Ibrox as an instant star for McInnes.

The 28-year-old ace, who scored six goals for Besiktas last term, is the exact profile of player that the Gers lack at the moment, as he is a left-footed right winger, and that is why he would be an even better signing than Hjerto-Dahl.

Cerny would fill a huge hole in the Rangers squad, as a proven performer in the Premiership, whilst the Norwegian youngster is unproven in Scotland and would join to compete with eight other players for a starting berth.

That is why the Light Blues should prioritise a deal for the Besiktas outcast for a fee of £8.5m instead of pushing the boat out for Hjerto-Dahl, as he would be a more important and more impactful signing.
