The Asian Games 2026 cricket competition has entered a crucial stage, but persistent rain in Aichi-Nagoya has already disrupted the knockout phase. Several quarterfinals were abandoned without a single delivery being bowled, with higher-ranked teams advancing under the tournament’s rules. The weather could now play an equally significant role in determining whether defending champions India will meet Pakistan in the final.

Rain disrupts Quarterfinals as rankings decide progression

The third and fourth quarterfinals on Tuesday were washed out in Nisshin after heavy rain prevented Sri Lanka from taking on Nepal and Bangladesh from facing Malaysia. Neither match reached the toss, with officials eventually calling both games off.

Sri Lanka progressed to the semifinals because of their superior T20I ranking. Nepal had entered the knockout stage after an impressive group campaign that included a major victory over Afghanistan, but they were denied an opportunity to continue their run on the field.

Bangladesh also advanced without playing after their quarterfinal against Malaysia was abandoned. The result followed the same rule that had already determined the outcome of the earlier quarterfinals.

India had also progressed from a rain-affected quarterfinal against Afghanistan, while Pakistan advanced after their match against Hong Kong was washed out.

India and Pakistan could set up a final

With the quarterfinals completed, India will meet Sri Lanka in the semifinal, while Pakistan will face Bangladesh in the other last-four clash. However, the weather forecast could once again influence the tournament. Both semifinals are scheduled for Thursday, when there is currently a 60 per cent chance of rain in Aichi-Nagoya.

If either semifinal is abandoned without a result, the higher-ranked team in the respective contest will advance to the final. This means India would progress ahead of Sri Lanka if their semifinal is washed out, while Pakistan would move through against Bangladesh under the same ranking-based provision.

That scenario would produce a highly anticipated India-Pakistan final at the Asian Games.

The weather situation remains a concern beyond the semifinals. There is also a 40 per cent chance of rain on the morning of the October 3 final, raising the possibility that the gold-medal match could also be affected. The rules for the 2026 Asian Games differ from those used in the previous edition. In 2022, India were awarded the gold medal after their final against Afghanistan ended without a result, with India progressing as the higher-seeded side.

This time, however, there is no similar advantage in the final. If the India-Pakistan gold-medal match is washed out and cannot produce a result, both teams will share the gold medal.

That would create an unusual conclusion to the cricket competition, with the possibility of India and Pakistan standing together on the podium without playing a completed final. For now, the focus will be on Thursday’s semifinals, where the weather could determine whether the much-anticipated India-Pakistan clash becomes a reality.
