Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDomantas Sabonis will remain with the Sacramento Kings this season with two years and $94 million remaining on his current contract, and team sources say he has expressed a willingness to recommit and fully buy into the roster, following months of the front office exploring potential trade scenarios.
Sacramento general manager Scott Perry has maintained an open, transparent relationship with Sabonis since taking over the role in April 2025, according to team sources, including honest conversations about trade possibilities that could benefit both sides.
The Kings nearly sent Sabonis to the Toronto Raptors at February's trade deadline for a package including RJ Barrett, a move Sabonis reportedly would have welcomed, but the deal collapsed when Toronto couldn't offload Jakob Poeltl's remaining contract.
Sabonis underwent season-ending surgery on a partially torn meniscus shortly after that deal fell through, and Sacramento revisited trade discussions this summer. Perry explored a potential sign-and-trade involving restricted free agent center Jalen Duren, but the Detroit Pistons were unwilling to part with Duren in exchange for Sabonis. Predraft conversations with the Charlotte Hornets and at least one call with the Boston Celtics also failed to produce a deal, with Charlotte ultimately trading LaMelo Ball for draft capital instead of pairing him with Sabonis.
With no trade materializing, Sabonis has shown signs of embracing his return to Sacramento. He traveled to Las Vegas to sit courtside with Kings front office personnel during a summer league game and met again with Perry in Sacramento last week to discuss their path forward together.
Sabonis has also been welcoming to Darius Acuff Jr., who the Kings selected with the seventh overall pick and represents the next era of the franchise.
Sabonis became extension-eligible in July, though sources said a new contract is not currently under discussion. He also recently switched representation to CAA Sports.
Perry expressed confidence in Sabonis' approach heading into the season.
"He's going to play hard," said Perry. "I don't think he knows any other way to play. So regardless of what may or may not have been, when Domas locks in, he's going to come and compete. That's my expectation. We need the best version of him this year and for him to accomplish whatever goals and objectives he has as a player for the remainder of his career, he knows he's got to play."
