Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayErrol Spence Jr. closed the curtain on his boxing career Saturday night, announcing his retirement moments after losing a unanimous decision to Tim Tszyu in Sydney, Australia. The former unified welterweight champion said he leaves the sport with his health, finances and family intact after a career that spanned more than a decade at the top level.
“It was a great fight. Congratulations to Tim and Jeff Fenech. It was a good showing by Tim. I answered a lot of questions about myself, and now it’s time to go home with my family and start a new life,” Spence said. He then removed any doubt about his future, saying, “Yeah, for sure. I’ve got my faculties intact. My money is good and working for itself, so everything’s good, man. I’ve got a beautiful family, and I thank God that I’m able to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family by my side. Everything’s going to go well.”
Tszyu earned scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111 after gradually taking command of the middleweight contest. Spence remained competitive through the early rounds, but the Australian’s pressure and work rate became the difference as the fight wore on.
Rather than pursue another comeback, Spence made it clear he has no interest in extending his career. After nearly three years away from the ring before facing Tszyu, he decided one final challenge was enough.
Spence leaves boxing as one of the defining welterweights of his generation, finishing his career secure in the knowledge that he achieved his goals inside the ring while avoiding the lasting damage that has affected so many former fighters.
