Giannis Antetokounmpo is already thinking about life after his playing career, and the two-time NBA MVP revealed that coaching the New York Knicks would be his preferred destination if he ever joins the sidelines.

Speaking during an interview with streamer N3ON, Antetokounmpo said he sees two possible paths once he retires from basketball: becoming an NBA coach or stepping away from the game for a period before focusing on investing.

Asked what his plans are after retirement, Antetokounmpo said, “It’s either I’m going to be a stay-at-home dad or I’m going to be a coach. I want to be a coach in the NBA.”

When asked which team he would most like to coach, the 31-year-old did not hesitate.

“If I’d be a coach, the New York Knicks,” Antetokounmpo replied before adding that he also sees himself becoming an investor later in life.

The comments come just weeks after the Knicks captured the 2026 NBA championship, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in five games to secure the franchise’s first title in more than five decades. New York completed a dominant postseason run, sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals before winning the Finals 4-1.

The Knicks also finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 53-29 record, good for third place in the Eastern Conference, before peaking during the playoffs.

Although Antetokounmpo named New York as his dream coaching destination, he made it clear that basketball would not immediately become his full-time focus after retirement.

“I think for some few years I’ll go ghost because I want to be able to do like my own thing,” he said. “Because you know we play every other days, we don’t have time for ourselves. So I want to be like in my kids tournaments and like their place at school, you know, just be in their life a lot more.”

Only after spending time with his family does he envision returning to the NBA.

“And after that come back, you know, either be a coach or be an investor,” Antetokounmpo said.

Despite discussing retirement, Antetokounmpo also noted that he expects to continue playing for another decade or more.

“You still have like 10 years,” N3ON said.

“Yeah. I know. 10, 15 years,” Antetokounmpo responded.

Antetokounmpo enters the next chapter of his playing career following one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history. During the 2026 offseason, the Miami Heat acquired him and Bobby Portis from the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, multiple first-round picks and a future pick swap.

The blockbuster ended Antetokounmpo’s 13-year run with Milwaukee, where he developed from the 15th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft into one of the league’s most decorated players. Over 895 regular-season games with the Bucks, he averaged 24.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists while winning two MVP awards, a Defensive Player of the Year award, an NBA championship and an NBA Finals MVP.

Before the trade, Antetokounmpo appeared in 36 games during the 2025-26 season, averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists while shooting a career-best 62.4% from the field.
