Former UFC welterweight title challenger Ian Machado Garry has his eyes set on a surging contender for his next fight.

Ian Machado Garry’s first career title shot fell short of the mark against UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev last month at UFC 330. Garry, who earned the title shot after back-to-back wins over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad, lost to Makhachev by unanimous decision in the UFC 330 headliner.

Despite the loss to Makhachev, Garry remains confident he can hand Makhachev a massive upset loss if they run it back in the near future. But Garry will likely have to win at least one fight before making the case for a title shot.

With Makhachev likely set to face Prates in his next title defense, Garry has his eyes set on another surging contender whose hype train he wants to derail.

In a recent interview with Eze Talks Sports, Garry was pressed on who he wants in his return to the Octagon to get back into the welterweight title mix.

“For me, there’s only one fight that makes sense right now,” Garry said.

“That’s Michael Morales. When I beat him, I’m the only one who deserves a title shot, even though me and Islam have just fought. Whether Islam wins, whether Carlos Prates wins the next fight, it’s two massive rematches. If I go out there and finish Michael Morales and get my hand raised, it’s undeniable that I’m back up there for a title shot.

Morales hasn’t fought since finishing Sean Brady at UFC 322 last year. He’s 19-0 in his career with recent wins over Gilbert Burns, Neil Magny, and Jake Matthews.
