Japan secured an Olympic qualification spot and defended their continental crown on Sunday, defeating Iran 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-23) in the final of the 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Continental Championship in Fukuoka.

As Volleyball World reported, the win gives Japan their third consecutive Olympics appearance and 11th overall. It was also their second straight AVC final victory over Iran.

More than 6,500 fans packed Kitakyushu City Gymnasium to watch the hosts complete a composed, straight-sets performance. Japan now hold 11 Asian titles in total, matching the number of Olympic appearances they have earned across the program's history.

Nishida and Takahashi Lead the Offense

Opposite Yuji Nishida and outside hitter Ran Takahashi shared the scoring load for Japan. Nishida finished with 18 points, posting three kill blocks, two aces, and a 65% attacking rate. Takahashi added 17 points on three aces and 14 spike kills at 61% efficiency.

Iran's opposite Ali Hajipour matched Nishida's 18-point total, contributing four kill blocks and an ace, while 22-year-old outside hitter Poriya Khanzadeh produced 13 points for the runners-up.

The final was the third consecutive meeting between Japan and Iran at this championship. Iran had won the 2021 edition on Japanese home turf; Japan answered with gold in 2023 and again in 2026.

Korea Edges Australia for Bronze and World Cup Berth

The bronze medal match was the day's closest contest. South Korea beat Australia 3-2 (16-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 15-9), twice surrendering a set lead before winning the fifth set convincingly.

Outside hitter Subong Heo led all scorers in the match with 28 points, attacking at a 67% clip and adding an ace and a kill block. Teammate Sungjin Lim contributed 15 points, and opposite Donghyeok Im chipped in 10.

Australia's outside hitter Lorenzo Pope was his team's most productive player, totaling 23 points including three kill blocks.

Opposite William D'Arcy-Miles paced the Volleyroos' serve game with three aces en route to 14 points, while outside Luke Smith added 13 with three stuffs.

Olympic and World Cup Qualification Picture

The top three finishers all earned berths at the 2027 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Cup in Poland, joining host USA as qualifiers from the AVC bracket.

Japan's gold also secures the first Olympic quota spot from the Asian region for Los Angeles 2028, beyond the automatic bid held by the United States as host nation.

The final championship standings saw Thailand finish fifth, China sixth, Chinese Taipei seventh, and India eighth, with Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and New Zealand completing the 12-team field.
