Martinez understands that he is selling more than an interim title defense.

“Representing Guatemala and having my first defense means a lot,” Martinez said during fight week. “We have a great celebration, and I’m going to make sure that celebration happens in a big way. We are ready to defend my title.”

Plantic is not an accommodating opponent for this arena expansion. The 2020 Croatian Olympian has recorded 10 stoppages in 13 professional victories and applies enough pressure to draw Martinez into exchanges. Martinez throws combinations willingly, but Aleem lasted all 12 rounds against him that night. If Plantic absorbs that output and lands his heavier punches between combinations, ProBox’s plans for a Guatemalan attraction can disappear before the attendance figures are counted.

A Regional Audience Carries Real Value

The attendance will say more about Martinez’s commercial future than another WBC promise. He may be positioned for the Canelo Alvarez versus Christian Mbilli winner, but sanctioning body placement does not guarantee access to either man.

Canelo has little financial incentive to select Martinez, win or lose. If Mbilli defeats Canelo, a rematch between them would likely generate far more money than a second fight between Mbilli and Martinez. The Guatemalan may remain an interim champion defending against contenders while the larger names pursue more profitable business.

That makes tonight’s crowd important. Consistent ticket sales would give Martinez bargaining power without requiring a superstar to choose him.

ProBox is testing a different route from the premium pay-per-view formula. Instead of charging a large price for two established names, it is offering a $5 stream and building the event around a fighter with concentrated cultural appeal. That following can provide Martinez with regular headlining dates even if casual boxing followers have not embraced him.

Still, moving from 4,000 spectators to a 12,000-seat setup is a considerable leap. Festival Chapín and the broader celebrations may increase turnout, but they also make it harder to separate interest in Martinez from interest in the weekend itself.

Beating Plantic protects his ranking. Putting a strong crowd inside the Galen Center gives Martinez something the WBC cannot award him: leverage.
