Manchester United have received a boost in their pursuit of Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Frenchman now expected to leave Selhurst Park in 2027.
The 29-year-old has entered the final year of his contract, and Palace have reportedly accepted that his time at the club is coming to an end, according to Football Insider. The main question is whether the Eagles cash in in January or let him leave as a free agent next summer.
Jean-Philippe Mateta emerges as Manchester United option
United have been monitoring Mateta as they consider adding another experienced striker to their squad. The Red Devils wanted greater competition for Benjamin Sesko during the summer but ultimately prioritised strengthening other areas of the team.
However, the situation could change when the January transfer window opens. Sesko’s injury problems have highlighted the need for another reliable option up front, and Joshua Zirkzee could also be moved on.
Mateta would fit the profile United are looking for. He has extensive Premier League experience and has established himself as an effective goalscorer since joining Palace.
The striker has scored 42 Premier League goals across the last three seasons, making him an attractive option for a club looking for an experienced frontman rather than another developing prospect.
Mateta set for Old Trafford move?
Palace now face an important decision over the Frenchman’s future. Selling him in January would allow the club to collect a transfer fee, while keeping him until the end of the campaign would mean losing him for nothing.
Manchester United are understood to be particularly interested, with director of football Jason Wilcox reportedly an admirer of the striker, according to TEAMtalk.
Clubs elsewhere are also interested, meaning United could face competition if they decide to formalise their interest.
For now, Mateta’s departure from Palace in 2027 appears increasingly likely, with January potentially offering United an opportunity to move the experienced striker forward.
