The Miami Marlins' flickering playoff hopes took a major hit on Tuesday.

The Marlins announced that closer Pete Fairbanks has been placed on the injured list with right median nerve irritation. Pitcher Dax Fulton was brought back to Miami in his place.

While there is no indication as to how long Fairbanks will be sidelined, he has battled nerve issues before. Fairbanks has Raynaud's syndrome, which causes diminished blood flow to the hands and numbness in his fingers. Nerve issues sent Fairbanks to the IL in 2024 and earlier in 2026, causing him to miss a couple of weeks.

A casual glance at Fairbanks' numbers would not indicate that his absence would be much of a loss. He had posted a 6.02 ERA and a 1.314 WHIP in his 40.2 innings this season, recording 18 saves while striking out 57 batters with 19 walks. 

However, Fairbanks had been much better of late. He had allowed only two runs on two hits and five walks over his last 10 innings spanning 11 games, striking out 16 batters. His 4.47 FIP may not be stellar, but it is much better than his ERA. 

In the interim, Calvin Faucher may be the favorite to take over in the ninth inning. He had recorded 15 saves for the Marlins in 2025 and could return to the closer role while Fairbanks is sidelined.
