With LeBron James' free agency decision with the Philadelphia 76ers finalized, the NBA can now move forward with completing its schedule, which is still expected to be released in mid-August as usual, according to a league spokesperson, despite the delay caused by James' extended free agency. James remains central to the NBA's broadcast strategy. He and the Lakers tied for the most national television appearances of any team last season, and the 76ers, who had just 14 national broadcast games scheduled last year, are expected to see that number climb significantly with James now on the roster.

Adam Silver had directly addressed the delay earlier this month during a panel at the CNBC/Boardroom Game Plan event.

"Where LeBron plays affects the schedule," said Silver on July 16. "I would like him to make his announcement already so we can finish the schedule, because, as you might imagine, the teams are calling us, the networks are calling us, and everybody wants to lock in the schedule. But it will influence how we set the schedule, how we set opening week, Christmas Day, etc."

The league's scheduling process typically begins with its marquee dates, including Christmas Day and opening week. NBA executive vice president for basketball strategy and growth Evan Wasch previously described the process to The Athletic.

"We'll generate, again, hundreds of potential Christmas Day drafts," said Wasch. "The different teams you could feature, the different matchups, the different time slots, and then we'll just start conversations with ESPN. See what they have in mind. Try to find middle ground and usually we're pretty aligned with sort of the general structure."

James has played on Christmas Day every year since 2007, making his team's placement on that schedule a near certainty regardless of where he signed. The stakes were similarly high for opening week, during which James and the Lakers appeared once on NBC and once on Amazon last season.

Had James chosen a different franchise, the scheduling impact would have varied significantly. The Miami Heat had just five national television games scheduled last season, compared to 18 for Giannis Antetokounmpo's Milwaukee Bucks and 24 for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The NBA typically meets with media partners in early July before finalizing schedules using optimization software that narrows billions of potential configurations down to a workable final product. Wasch previously acknowledged how disruptive late-breaking superstar decisions can be to that process.

"It's the scheduling team's nightmare when that stuff happens late in our process," Wasch told the Houston Chronicle in 2023. "The worst outcome is big superstar movement in late July. That will really push the process back."
