Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks struck an optimistic tone regarding Michael Porter Jr.’s future, saying the organization values the veteran forward despite ongoing speculation about his long-term status.

Speaking about a possible contract extension, Marks indicated there is no urgency to reach an agreement while making it clear the franchise would like Porter to remain in Brooklyn.

“We’ll have those discussions. We’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now. We value him a lot. He had a terrific year,” Marks said, according to NBA insider Michael Scotto. “I love Mike, the guy, the person, the player, and I hope he is part of this team.”

Marks’ comments come as Brooklyn faces important decisions following a 20-62 season that ended with the third-worst record in the Eastern Conference. While the Nets continue rebuilding around a younger core, recent reporting from Jake Fischer indicated the front office is willing to discuss trades involving either Porter or center Nic Claxton if another team meets its asking price.

Porter was Brooklyn’s most productive offensive player during the 2025-26 campaign after arriving before the season. The 28-year-old averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists in 52 games while shooting 46.3% from the field, 36.3% from three-point range and 85.9% at the free-throw line.

His perimeter shooting remained one of the league’s more valuable offensive weapons. Porter attempted 9.3 three-pointers per game and converted 3.4 per contest, providing the Nets with much-needed floor spacing despite the team’s struggles throughout the season.

Contract status could shape Brooklyn’s decision-making over the coming months. Porter has one season remaining on his deal and is scheduled to earn $40.8 million in 2026-27. Because the contract is only partially guaranteed, it could appeal to teams seeking an established scorer without committing to a long-term financial obligation.
