Ben is an experienced sports writer and editor, graduating with a Master’s in Sports Journalism in 2017.

Ben counts experience with publications like The Liverpool Echo and The Lincolnshire Echo. He has covered various sports, from American football to Mixed Martial Arts, but his primary passion is football reporting.

Since joining Football FanCast in 2018, starting out as a freelance writer covering nearly every team in the English football ladder, Ben has progressed through the ranks. He now leads the publication’s news team as a senior editor.

Andrew Cavenagh insists the recruitment of “leaders” will be high on the priority list when Rangers revamp their squad for next season.

Rangers transfer strategy revealed

Club chairman Cavenagh is backing Danny Rohl and on the question of resources available to the German coach, he said: “I know those are the popular topics, right? Money and players.

“I would say our focus is on building a winning team and we are prepared to commit more resources to achieve that.

“But it is about the nuances now, about finding leaders, about finding the right mentality and it is less about a dollar amount.

“We will go into this thinking, ‘how do we get the best team?’ as opposed to, ‘I have X pounds to spend, what do I do with it?’.

“Last year was a massive amount of change. I think it was about 27 ins and outs or something like that. I would not expect to see something quite at that magnitude but you can do the maths.

“There will still be a number of signings and we will be active again. It will be a step down in terms of volume from last year but one step up in terms of focus on chemistry, leadership, etc.”

Cavenagh also revealed an SPFL bias will influence transfer decisions: “We have a pro-Scottish bias in the club today. Meaning if you have two players roughly equal and one is Scottish we will take the Scottish player.

“When we look at what positions we are filling we don’t start with people, we start with profiles. What position is it, what type of person is it.

“An athletic centre-back or a ball-winning centre-back for example. How big, how fast? We are always asking who is Scottish that fits that profile.

“Every time we are looking at that. That’s not to say we can just go out and grab 11 Scots off the street and win the title.

“It is a bias towards Scottish players but that doesn’t mean that’s the only criteria we look at to build a winning team. I would say we equally look at an SPFL bias.

“If we’re looking at two players who are roughly similar and one has extensive SPFL experience against one does not, we would take the SPFL experienced player.”

Rangers transfer updates: Shankland, Andersen

The Gers have already taken their first steps in that approach by agreeing a deal for Hearts and Scotland striker Lawrence Shankland.

However, they are also advancing in talks for a player from the continent, and it's a familiar name in long-time target Silas Andersen.

Indeed, according to Football Insider, while Celtic and Sporting are both in the chase for the Hacken midfielder, Rangers are 'advancing in transfer talks'.

The fact the Gers did not qualify for the Champions League could be a stumbling block however, with the 21 year-old keen to play amongst Europe's elite.

That could open the door for the Hoops to get back ahead in the race for a rising talent who has scored four times in all competitions this season from his defensive midfield role.

Here's what AI says about Silas Andersen:

  • Profile & physique: The Danish midfielder stands at 6'3" and plays for BK Häcken, wearing the number 8 shirt
  • Key attributes: He brings both creativity and defensive resilience to midfield - his stats show a successful dribble rate of 2.24 and a tackle average of 2.09, alongside 1.04 chances created per 90 minutes
  • International recognition: Andersen is a Denmark U21 international with 7 caps and 2 goals at that level
  • Transfer value & contract: He joined Häcken in January 2025 for a reported €1.0m fee and signed a contract valid until 2029. By May 2026, Häcken's valuation had risen sharply to around £9m (≈€10.5m), having previously rejected a €4.4m offer from FC Copenhagen
  • Hot transfer target: Celtic, Rangers, Sporting CP, Hamburg and FC Köln are all among the clubs monitoring him ahead of the summer window

Rangers are also targeting a deal for Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil... read more below!
