• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: PRO-BOOT MX” REMEDIAL BOOT REPAIR

Note the big tear in the toe box area of this brand-new boot.

Although you only think of Pro-Boot MX as a company that resoles well-used Motocross boots, they recently came upon a boot that had a bad luck story. Pro-Boot MX’s Randy Nagel got a brand-new Gaerne SG12 boot from a guy who ran his foot into something that split the metal toe cap in two and tore a hole through the side of the boot. Luckily, he didn’t get hurt. He sent the boot to Pro-Boot MX, not to have the brand-new soles replaced, but to see if they could do something about the big tear in the toe box.

After the repair, the boot is good to go.

Randy glued the inner padding back together, welded up the crack and color matched the area with a flexible bonding material. The Pro-Boot MX repair looked pretty good, especially for a new boot that looked like it’s effective lifespan was only one ride. Total cost including a new toe cap and the repair was under $50.00 (plus return shipping). So, if you have a run-in with a footpeg or your kickstarter gouges your boot, don’t throw it away, send it to www.pro-bootmx.com or call (507) 534-1247.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT:SUPERLITE TITANIUM T-HANDLE TOOL SET

The Superlite titanium kit has 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm and 14mm T-handle wrenches to cover all the bases on Japanese and Austrian brands. The 6mm and 13mm T-handles are required for European bikes. Every decent mechanic already has a set of T-handles, but factory mechanics want the $400 Superlite Titanium T-handles for two reasons: (1) They’re lighter, thus easier to carry in a tool bag with spare goggles, a water bottle, pit board and other miscellaneous parts mechanics carry to and from the track, and (2) they’ve got the factory style that matches the titanium axles and bolts on their bikes.

The Superlite titanium T-handles aren’t only lightweight and cool-looking, they’re constructed using the highest-quality aerospace materials and welding procedures as well. Made from Grade 5 Ti6-4 (Ti6AL-4V) titanium alloy, they have CNC-machined tips and are welded together to aerospace specifications (AWS D17.1).

The 10mm Superlite T-handle weighs 133 grams (4.7 ounces), which is 183 grams (6.4 ounces) lighter than a Motion Pro chrome vanadium T-handle at 316 grams (11.1 ounces). The 13mm Superlite T-handle weighs 220 grams (7.8 ounces) compared to 334 grams (11.8 ounces) for a chrome vanadium version.

Currently, Superlite offers titanium bolt kits and titanium T-handles but is already working on custom aluminum T-handle holders; half kits with only 8mm, 10mm and 12mm T-handles for mechanics who only work with Japanese bikes; and stubby-version 8mm, 10mm, 12mm T-handles per request from factory mechanics who want to store smaller T-handles in their race-day backpacks that they take to the starting line.

If your bolts are on tight, the titanium T-handles will flex when trying to break it loose. Some picky mechanics didn’t like this, others didn’t mind the flex because they were enamored by the fact that they were using $400 T-handles.

The Superlite Titanium T-handles were made for factory mechanics looking to lighten their race-day backpacks and for the guy who likes to have the coolest setup in the pits. Superlite started by making titanium bolt kits in the UK, and now it’s breaking into the American market with factory Pro Circuit Kawasaki mechanic Olly Stone importing its products to the USA. Olly, who wrenches for Austin Forkner, was born and raised in England and came to the States to live his dream of being a factory mechanic. Retail price: $400.00— at [email protected] or www.docwob.com.

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: ACERBIS POLYPROPYLENE KTM SKID PLATE

For years, the typical skid plate was made from aluminum. It was strong, light and durable. Then, carbon fiber came on the scene, and it was even lighter. Now, the newest generation of skid plates are made from polypropylene plastic. The benefits of plastic are that it can be color-matched, is flexible enough not to drastically stiffen a bike’s frame, and is less expensive.

MXA installed an Acerbis polypropylene skid plate on our 2021 KTM 450SXF because the MXA wrecking crew is hard on its bikes and has suffered engine case, water pump, ignition cover and lower-frame rail damage in the past. KTMs don’t come with skid plates on their motocross bikes, or even cross-country models. If you hit rocks, logs or other bikes, a skid plate can save your day and your wallet.

Thanks to a molded hook that engages the rear-frame cross-member, the Acerbis skid plate only requires one bolt to tighten the steel bracket that clamps the skid plate to the frame’s downtubes. Here is how we installed it: First, we slid the molded-in rear hook onto the rear frame cross-brace. Second, we put the one-bolt bracket on the frame (resting on KTM’s welded-on skid plate tabs). Third, we pushed the Acerbis skid plate up until the bolt hole lined up with the bracket’s threaded insert. Fourth, we installed the Allen bolt and spacer through the skid plate and tightened it down. It wasn’t as easy as we make it sound; just persevere.

After you ride your bike for the first time, be sure to double-check the fitment of the skid plate. The extreme loads placed on the frame can loosen up the skid plate. Once you tighten it down a second time, it should stay.

It’s no secret that an aluminum skid plate can increase frame rigidity—not a good thing. To combat this, it’s not uncommon for aluminum skid plates to come with rubber grommets around the bolts. With plastic skid plates, there is enough inherent flex in the material to eliminate this concern. Acerbis molded soft rubber segments inside the skid plate to cushion against wear on the frame rails. The polypropylene skid plate is very durable at 6mm thick. The skid plate is shaped to fit snugly against the contours of the engine, reducing space for mud collection. The price of polypropylene skid plates is half that of carbon fiber skid plates.

Our major complaint was with the 5mm Allen bolt that held the front of the skid plate. It got splattered with dirt, making it hard to get out. We would prefer an 8mm hex-head bolt to ease tightening and removal. Retail price: $82.95 (orange or black) at www.acerbisusa.com or (800) 659-1440.

MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: MOTO TASSINARI VFORCE4R

The unique VForce reed valve features double the reed tip surface over a conventional reed valve design. The added reed petals mean that reeds only travel half the distance as a conventional reed valve to get the same airflow. The shorter opening means that they open quicker, close more completely and last longer. Ever since their introduction VForce reeds have been popular with two-stroke riders looking for more midrange, increased airflow and perfect fit. Constantly changing to improve the design, Motocross Tassinari offers the VForce4 with its pre-curved reed petal, carbon fiber petal tips, wider cage, 10.5% increase in reed tip area and longer reed stops. The VForce4 has become the go-to reed cage for many two-stroke owners. But wait, there’s more. Enter the “VForce4R” with its rubber over-molding on the reed petal tips to increase petal life, straighter intake manifold, newly design cage and a winged air guide that increases air velocity. MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: PROTECH FULL-WRAP FORK GUARDS

The first time the MXA wrecking crew saw the British-made ProTech fork guards, we knew they were something every motocross racer needed. The ProTech guards offer 350 degrees of protection from roost for your bike’s fork legs. They vastly improve the chances of your fork seals lasting twice as long. The ProTech guards directly replace the standard OEM guards on KTMs, Husqvarnas, Hondas, Yamahas, Gas Gas bikes and Shercos.

Modern fork guards protect your fork legs from rock damage from the front but do nothing to keep the chrome from being damaged by dirt, debris and rocks ricocheting off the frame or roost thrown off the trailing edge of your own front tire. Just one stone chip to a chrome fork leg is enough to cause a fork seal leak. The first thing that most suspension specialists check before replacing a leaking fork seal is the condition of the chrome on the backside of the fork leg. Surprise! It is estimated that half of all fork seal leaks are caused by stone chips to the fork’s chrome legs. Sadly, no manufacturer cares about eliminating fork seal leaks caused by rocks.

Luckily, ProTech, a small British company, understood the problem and injection-molded wraparound fork guards that completely cover the fork tube, save for a small 1-inch opening up the back that allows the plastic guard to be flexed wide enough to pop over the fork leg. The small gap isn’t optimal, but the protection is much better than with stock fork guards.

The MXA wrecking crew races up to 10 bikes a weekend. That translates into a lot of blown fork seals, but none on the bikes equipped with ProTech wraparound fork guards. For 2020, ProTech has made a series of improvements to its fork guards. First, the grade of plastic was upgraded to the type used on automobile bumpers to eliminate any chance of roost cracking the plastic. The new plastic is more flexible and resilient. Second, the top of the fork guard has been redesigned to protect more of the fork’s stanchion (the large diameter aluminum tubes that the chrome fork legs slide into) from being peppered by roost. Third, on KTM, Husky, Sherco and Gas Gas guards, the tooling was changed so that the brake hose clamp could accept a speedo hose along with the front brake line. This was a big plus for off-road and enduro riders.

Retail price: $60.00—www.protechguards.co.uk or www.n2dirt.net. In the USA.ProTech does not have an American distributor, so ProTech fork guards have to be shipped from England (we have included the shipping charges in the price above). If you are in a rush, there is a good chance that you could order the ProTech guards from www.n2dirt.net in Southern CalIfornia.
