The three-division champion backed Gervonta Davis without hesitation when asked who would win against Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya at their best

Shakur Stevenson did not hesitate when asked to choose between Gervonta Davis and Oscar De La Hoya in a fantasy matchup. The three-division champion immediately backed Davis, reigniting one of boxing’s favorite cross-era debates.

“Gervonta Davis,” said Stevenson to the Daily Mail.

The prediction is certain to create talk, given De La Hoya’s accomplishments during his Hall of Fame career. Nicknamed “The Golden Boy” after winning Olympic gold in 1992, De La Hoya captured world titles in six weight classes and became one of boxing’s biggest stars of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Fighting primarily between lightweight and welterweight, De La Hoya defeated champions including Julio César Chávez, Genaro Hernández, Ike Quartey, Arturo Gatti and Fernando Vargas. He also pushed Félix Trinidad, Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather in three of the biggest fights of his career, finishing with a professional record of 39-6.

Gervonta has won world titles at super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight and built a reputation as one of boxing’s hardest punchers. His biggest victories have come against José Pedraza, Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, Ryan Garcia and Frank Martin.

Shakur’s opinion is unlikely to change many minds, particularly given his friendship with Davis, but it adds another entry to one of boxing’s favorite fantasy debates.

Davis has not fought since fighting Lamont Roach Jr. to a controversial draw in March 2025. The WBA has since named him its lightweight champion in recess, and recent reports have suggested he may not return to the ring until early 2027 despite being linked to potential fights against Devin Haney and Floyd Schofield.
