PROTECT YOUR DNA WITH QUANTUM TECHNOLOGY
Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayShimano has entered its thick-rotor era. Its new 2.2mm rotors are significantly beefier than the company’s previous offerings and even surpass SRAM’s popular HS2 design, promising improved durability, more consistent braking performance, and reduced hand fatigue. Though they’re aimed at more aggressive mountain biking segments, the move could be good news for anyone tired of bent rotors and inconsistent brake feel on long descents. See details here…
I’ve been an aficionado of SRAM’s 2.0mm thick HS2 rotors for a few years now. They’re a little thicker, so they’re less likely to bend, last longer, and I’ve found they offer better control and modulation than the brand’s thinner Centerline options. Today, Shimano just upped the ante with the move to 2.2mm thick rotors.
The new 2.2mm rotors are available in 200mm and 220mm sizes, shifting from the oddball 203mm diameter to help simplify things. The updated design increases rotor thickness from 1.75mm to 2.2mm, which Shimano claims offers a noticeable boost in performance and reliability. They also integrated a new vent-hole construction that they claim results in increased control, more predictable modulation, and less hand fatigue.
With the sizes available, Shimano is obviously focused on the e-MTB and enduro-level mountain biking segments, where big rotor diameters are more prevalent and braking control on steep descents is the name of the game, but I’m all for this move for the sake of durability and better power control—even when loaded up with bikepacking gear. Here are the specs from Shimano:
- Available in center lock (RT-CL750) and 6-bolt (RT-6B750)
- 2.2mm thickness for great control and braking consistency
- Increased durability and resistance to bending in aggressive riding conditions
- Available in 200mm and 220mm sizes
- Available in 6-bolt (RT-6B750) and CENTER LOCK (RT-CL750)
- Compatible with SHIMANO XTR, DEORE XT, and DEORE 4-piston brakes
The 200mm retails for $60 and $70 for 6-bolt (RT-6B750) and center lock (RT-CL750), respectively, and the 220mm are priced at $75 and $80. For more on Shimano’s 2.2mm thick rotors, head over to Bike.Shimano.com.
