The Philadelphia Phillies were four outs away from taking Game 1 of the National League Wild Card against their division-rival Atlanta Braves. But Austin Riley hit a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to give Atlanta a 5-3 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. 

On Wednesday afternoon, with their season on the line, the Phils will hand the ball to this year’s All-Star Game starting pitcher in Cristopher Sanchez. Not only has Sanchez been a workhorse for the Phillies this year – tying with Aaron Nola and Sandy Alcantara for the most starts in the  National League – he’s given them quality as well as quantity. His 8.1 Wins Above Replacement was the highest among all Major League pitchers for the second year in a row and he followed up 212 strikeouts in 2025 with 231 this season. 

Sanchez saw the Braves less than a month ago, allowing three runs on five hits through six innings in a 5-2 loss on September 4.
