Roberto De Zerbi teased another major signing in his latest press conference and that may yet come in the form of Giorgio Scalvini at Tottenham Hotspur.

The young defender has been on the radar of Premier League sides for 12 months now and it looks as though the Lilywhites are the latest club to attempt a move.

The 23-year-old returned from an ACL injury without much trouble last season and that may be all the evidence Spurs need to push for a deal.

De Zerbi has already welcomed a rebuilt backline, adding Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke, and could complete a new-look backline with Scalvini.

Tottenham's new backline options

Andy Robertson	Robertson took the captain's armband in a recent friendly and that leadership is exactly why he's arrived. The Scot is forever underrated and that is likely to remain the case in North London. As a free agent, he should go down as one of the bargains of the summer.
Marcos Senesi	Another free agent, Senesi should make an instant impact under De Zerbi. The former Bournemouth man was crucial in possession under Andoni Iraola and De Zerbi will ask him to play a similar role when progressing play.
Jan Paul van Hecke	The idea has become clear at Spurs this summer. It's been all about handing De Zerbi defenders who can not only build out from the back, but do so whilst breaking the lines into midfield. He could be one of the Italian's most important additions.
Giorgio Scalvini?	Scalvini also fits that idea. The Atalanta man took almost three touches in the opposition's box per 90 last season and made 52 passes - three more than Senesi.

De Zerbi hasn't been afraid to make the club's transfer ambitions public as of late, and Scalvini would represent another excellent addition.

Tottenham advance Scalvini talks

Those in North London are wasting no time before turning to their targets. According to Tuttomercatoweb, as relayed by Sport Witness, Tottenham have opened talks with Scalvini and his representatives about a summer move.

The Lilywhites are working on securing the defender's go-ahead on personal terms ahead of a potential bid to Atalanta. That, however, is where their biggest problem lies.

The Italian club are not willing to sell Scalvini and won't even entertain offers from the likes of Spurs and Newcastle United unless they reach the €50m (£43m) mark.

Whilst Spurs have had no trouble paying such prices so far this summer, there's nothing to suggest that an offer in that region would be accepted even after consideration.

The 22-year-old has certainly earned high praise in Italy and it's easy to see why Atalanta are so keen to keep hold of his services this summer.
