Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner has had an up-and-down career so far in the City of Brotherly Love. He was mired in a brutal slump to begin his tenure in 2023 before a coordinated effort by fans to turn his season around propelled him to a hot finish to the year.

Turner seemed to be back to normal for good, putting up similar stats to his cumulative career numbers in 2024 and 2025, but now he’s taken a step back again. The three-time All-Star is batting just .246 with a .691 OPS this season, which is well below league average.

To make matters worse, Turner’s defense has regressed tremendously since his days on the Washington Nationals, with the superstar often committing a comedy of errors. That was the case again on Monday night as the Phillies took on another one of his former teams, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The back-to-back defending champions had men on first and second base in the first inning of the game when infielder Mookie Betts hit a ground ball out to shortstop. Turner initially dropped the ball and fired to first base late, loading the bases and inviting a hailstorm of boos from the Philadelphia crowd.

Phillies fans have no issue booing players, notoriously letting third baseman Alec Bohm hear it after a three-error game a few years ago. Surprisingly, it has a positive effect sometimes. Bohm would go on to have the best season of his career to that point, and the crowd had another positive impact on Turner on Monday.

The former champion quickly turned his night around, knocking two balls out of the park and driving in five men to help Philadelphia knock off the Dodgers. These two teams met in the playoffs last season, and Monday's contest certainly had a similar atmosphere.

The crowd was into the game early; there were some offensive fireworks and a lot of the stars came to play. Philadelphia’s crowd is known to be raucous, with former outfielder Nick Castellanos previously describing the playoff atmosphere as a “jungle,” and they brought that same energy on Monday night.
