Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou must be looking on enviously - new Tottenham Hotspur boss, Roberto De Zerbi, has been backed so extensively.

Cast your mind back to 2024, a time when Spurs perhaps could've kicked on under Postecoglou, yet the only ready-made arrival was that of Dominic Solanke, having largely plumped for youth in the form of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

Oh, how the Aussie would've loved the level of signing that De Zerbi has been allowed to bring to N17, with the Lilywhites pursuing Premier League-ready or Premier League-proven additions this summer.

Manchester City's Savinho is expected to be the next in the door, and teammate Omar Marmoush could well follow, with Spurs pinning their hopes on two men who haven't exactly set the world alight in English football.

Why Spurs are gambling on Marmoush and Savinho

It's an inflated market, let's put the transfer fees to one side.

In terms of pure output, it is fair to place scrutiny on Tottenham's potential two new faces, with Savinho having scored just two Premier League goals in two seasons, while Marmoush has scored just ten league goals in 18 months, albeit while only starting 22 games.

You'd be forgiven for having forgotten that either man even played for City last season. Marmoush, unsurprisingly, couldn't dislodge Erling Haaland, while the Brazilian was firmly behind a carousel of standout wingers.

So why is De Zerbi so intent on signing them? Well, in Marmoush's case, there have at least been flickers of what he can do at the Etihad, scoring seven times in his first 14 league starts at the end of 2024/25.

Back in Germany too, the former Eintracht Frankfurt talisman had been in remarkable form after joining from Wolfsburg on a free in 2023, scoring and assisting 57 goals in just 67 games for the Bundesliga side.

As for Savinho, he'd also enjoyed a real breakthrough at a similar time in Spain, starring for Girona in 2023/24 as he scored and assisted 19 goals in LaLiga at the age of just 20, leading the way in the division in terms of total successful dribbles completed.

De Zerbi is believed to feel that the 22-year-old can "explode" under his guidance at N17, with the Italian's fingerprints all over this summer's transfer activity.

The next signing De Zerbi is "very keen" to make before the deadline

As new Man City boss Enzo Maresca explained, Savinho has outlined his desire to leave since the first day of pre-season, the youngster so intent on heading to north London.

The Italian wasn't as clear about Marmoush's intentions, although the Egyptian is said to be "very open" to making the move to Tottenham too, after a difficult 18-month stint in Manchester.

That's one winger and a striker sorted, but the word on the street is that a third new forward is still being chased, this bumper, eye-watering window set to have one last splash.

Well, that player looks like it could well be Cody Gakpo, with journalist Paul O'Keefe suggesting that De Zerbi is "very keen" to sign the Liverpool man, while the club's Dutch core has been informing their coach about just how good the 27-year-old is.

Said to be valued at around £70m, the former PSV Eindhoven star could prove the best value of the lot, having at least shown more sustained end product in the Premier League.

Let's face it, he's not always been Mr Popular at Anfield, but 50 goals in just over 180 games isn't a dismal return, particularly for a man largely deployed off the left rather than through the middle.

Since his move in January 2023, he's scored and assisted 48 goals in 127 Premier League games, notably scoring ten times as the Reds claimed the title in 2024/25.

In terms of total goal involvements last season, he chalked up 12, having also created ten 'big chances' and averaged 1.5 key passes per game.

For comparison, Savinho registered just two goals and assists, created zero 'big chances' and averaged just 0.4 key passes per game. For Marmoush, meanwhile, the 27-year-old scored and assisted six times, created three 'big chances' and averaged just 0.6 key passes.

It's also worth noting what Gakpo has produced on the international scene, scoring three goals at the World Cup this summer, while netting 24 times in just 54 caps in total for the Netherlands. That betters Marmoush's Egypt tally of 11 goals in 55 games to date.

Gakpo, like the Man City pair, may not be one of the Premier League's true leading lights, but he's shown enough for club and country to be encouraged by, arguably even more so than Savinho and Marmoush.

The latter duo feel like expensive gambles on players whose ceilings might not yet be known. Gakpo, meanwhile, might be a safer pair of hands.
