Going into last night’s fight with red-hot 21 year old southpaw Moses Itauma, so many of us picked the younger, faster, harder-hitting man to win, and win in style. More than that, so many of us felt Itauma was the future of the heavyweight division. This could still be the case, down the road, after a serious rebuild, but right now it’s all about 34 year old Hrgovic.
After taking a real shellacking over the first half of the fight and then some, Hrgovic, courtesy of his iron chin and his all-round experience, pounced as Itauma suddenly ran out of gas in a huge way, his imminent collapse proving shocking (and reminding some of the way David Haye fell apart after having battered the mega-tough Carl Thompson all over the ring in their fight way back when).
Hrgovic got the turnaround stoppage in the ninth, and now the Croatian warrior is looking to bag a big payday as he looks to also defend the IBF belt he picked up in London. Hrgovic showed he is a real threat to just about anybody and there could be some very interesting fights for him over the next few months.
As for Itauma, he is of course going enough to come again, but he may have picked up some tough to shift demons after emptying out the way he so suddenly did. Can Itauma learn how to pace himself in a fight, with him fighting through fatigue and then getting that second wind? Who knows. The aforementioned Haye regrouped after the Thompson disaster, and maybe Itauma can too.
But again, right now it’s congratulations to Hrgovic, with that deserved apology attached. Now 21-1(16), the new IBF heavyweight champ showed again how thoroughly unpredictable the heavyweight division is. Itauma, now 14-1(12) found this out the hard way last night.
