India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand has thrown up a major talking point with the return of veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The 36-year-old has been rewarded with a national comeback after almost four years away from international cricket, having last played for India in November 2022. His impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in consecutive IPL seasons have once again put him firmly in the selectors’ plans.

Bhuvneshwar’s outstanding 2026 IPL campaign, in which he claimed 28 wickets, played a major role in his return to the Indian setup. With his experience, ability to swing the new ball and proven record in T20 cricket, his inclusion in the squad led by Shreyas Iyer could prove to be a valuable decision ahead of the series beginning on October 22, 2026.

3 reasons why Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s selection for New Zealand T20Is is a smart move

1. Exceptional back-to-back IPL form

Bhuvneshwar’s return to the Indian team has come on the back of performances rather than reputation. The veteran pacer was instrumental in RCB’s back-to-back IPL title triumphs and continued to deliver consistently with the ball.

During IPL 2026, Bhuvneshwar picked up 28 wickets in 16 matches while maintaining an economy rate of 7.95. His tally made him the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament and underlined his ability to remain effective in the shortest format despite being 36.

He also demonstrated his ability to perform when the pressure was at its highest. Bhuvneshwar claimed four wickets during RCB’s 2026 playoff campaign, picking up two wickets in Qualifier 1 and another two in the final.

His IPL 2026 numbers also built on a solid 2025 season, during which he finished with 17 wickets. The consistency across two campaigns makes his recall easier to justify.

2. Perfect suitability for New Zealand conditions

India’s upcoming assignment could suit Bhuvneshwar’s strengths particularly well. New Zealand conditions are traditionally associated with early seam movement, lateral assistance and the influence of wind, especially for fast bowlers operating with the new ball.

Bhuvneshwar has built his reputation around precisely those skills. His ability to swing the white ball in both directions during the powerplay can make him a dangerous proposition for New Zealand’s top order.

At venues such as Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland, India could benefit significantly from having a bowler capable of exploiting movement with the new ball. Bhuvneshwar’s experience of bowling in the powerplay also gives the team an additional tactical option during the opening six overs.

3. Crucial experience amidst key players’ workload management

Another major factor behind Bhuvneshwar’s selection is the experience he brings to a relatively inexperienced pace attack. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested from the T20I series as part of workload management, with India scheduled to play five ODIs and two Tests later on the tour.

The absence of Bumrah, along with Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana, leaves India without several experienced pace options. That makes Bhuvneshwar’s return particularly significant.

The veteran has played 87 T20Is for India and has taken 90 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 6.96. Beyond his numbers, his experience of handling pressure in international cricket could be equally valuable. His presence can also provide guidance to younger pacers such as Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav. In tight situations, Bhuvneshwar’s understanding of powerplay bowling and T20 match-ups could give India another reliable voice within the attack.
