Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayIndia began their five-match T20I series against the West Indies on a high, securing a convincing eight-wicket victory at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on October 6. While Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten century grabbed much of the attention during the run chase, young all-rounder Naman Dhir also emerged as one of the biggest talking points after producing an impressive performance on his T20I debut.
Haryana star makes an instant impact on T20I debut
West Indies were bowled out for 171 in 19.1 overs after being asked to bat first. Captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford provided the visitors with important half-centuries, but India’s bowlers kept making timely breakthroughs to prevent the innings from gaining complete momentum.
Dhir was one of the standout performers with the ball, finishing with excellent figures of 3/31. The 26-year-old displayed impressive composure despite being handed a challenging role on his international debut.
Interestingly, all three of his wickets came immediately after the West Indies batters had hit him for sixes. Hope, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer each cleared the boundary against his off-spin, only for Dhir to respond by dismissing the batter with the very next delivery on every occasion.
His ability to react positively under pressure made his spell even more impressive. Primarily known as a middle-order batter who can contribute with the ball when required, Dhir showed that his off-spin could become a genuine weapon for India rather than merely a part-time option.
India subsequently chased down 172 with ease, reaching the target in only 14.4 overs. Iyer led the way with a blistering unbeaten 102 off 43 balls.
Shreyas Iyer heaps praise on the young all-rounder
Following the impressive debut, India captain Iyer was quick to acknowledge Dhir’s contribution and, more importantly, his attitude during the contest. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Iyer highlighted how Dhir recognised the conditions and was eager to bowl during important phases of the innings.
“Yeah, special player, I must say. Like showing that attitude and approach, wanting to bowl in those crucial moments, he realized that the ball was turning, and then he capitalized on it. So commendable performance by him, and I love his attitude,” said Iyer.
The captain’s comments underline what made Dhir’s performance particularly encouraging. Rather than simply filling in with a few overs, he embraced the responsibility and repeatedly found ways to bounce back whenever the West Indies batters attacked him.

Selection for New Zealand tour gives clear message
Dhir’s impressive T20I debut is another significant step in what has been a rapid rise at the international level. He had already made his ODI debut against the West Indies in the preceding series before earning his T20I opportunity against the same opposition.
The all-rounder has now also been included in India’s squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. His selection sends a clear message about the faith the team management and selectors have in his potential.
With his ability to contribute as a middle-order batter and provide useful off-spin, Dhir offers India valuable balance. His performances against the West Indies could therefore be the beginning of a bigger role, as the selectors continue to assess him with an eye on India’s long-term white-ball plans.
