The battle for the Major League Cricket (MLC 2026) playoffs gathered further momentum as the Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) registered a crucial 11-run victory over table-toppers San Francisco Unicorns (SFU) in Match 26 of the tournament. After putting up a competitive total of 184/7 in their 20 overs, LAKR held their nerve with the ball to bowl the Unicorns out for 173 in 19.1 overs. The victory keeps the Knight Riders firmly in the playoff race while handing San Francisco their forth defeat of the season.

Colin Munro anchors the innings as Los Angeles Knight Riders post 184

Asked to bat first, Los Angeles Knight Riders made a solid start, reaching 46/1 at the end of the powerplay before accelerating through the middle overs. Colin Munro anchored the innings superbly with 52 off 43 deliveries, striking four fours and two sixes while holding one end together.

Munro found the perfect partner in Andre Russell, who shifted the momentum completely with a blistering 40 off just 18 balls. The pair stitched together a 50-run stand in only 24 deliveries, helping LAKR race past the 100-run mark inside 11 overs.

After Russell’s departure, Matthew Tromp continued the attacking approach with an excellent 49 off 28 deliveries, keeping the pressure firmly on the Unicorns’ bowlers. Wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton then provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 13 off just five balls, ensuring Los Angeles Knight Riders finished on a competitive 184/7 from their 20 overs.

San Francisco Unicorns launched an aggressive chase, racing to 60/4 during the Powerplay despite losing wickets at regular intervals. The early setbacks failed to derail their pursuit as Matthew Short and Hassan Khan rebuilt the innings with a valuable 50-run partnership that kept the required run rate within reach.

Short played a fluent knock of 43 from 30 deliveries, while Hassan top-scored with 45 off 33 balls, striking five fours and a six. Hammad Azam then added another twist to the contest by smashing a rapid 40 off only 19 deliveries, briefly reviving the Unicorns’ hopes of pulling off the chase.

However, Los Angeles Knight Riders held their nerve during the closing stages. Jason Holder produced the decisive spell of the evening, finishing with outstanding figures of 4/40 from his four overs to dismantle the middle and lower order. Russell complemented him brilliantly by claiming three wickets for 42 runs, ensuring San Francisco never gained complete control of the chase.

Despite crossing the 150-run mark in the 18th over, the Unicorns kept losing wickets at crucial moments and were eventually bowled out for 173 in 19.1 overs. The 11-run victory handed Los Angeles Knight Riders two vital points and significantly boosted their chances of securing a place in the MLC 2026 playoffs.
