Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayWest Indies and New Zealand are set to lock horns in a five-match ODI series, with the opening encounter scheduled to be played at the Guyana National Stadium on Saturday. The series marks the start of an important white-ball assignment for both sides, with Shai Hope leading the Caribbean outfit and Mitchell Santner captaining the Black Caps. New Zealand have opted to rest several senior players after their demanding Test tour of England, giving a number of younger cricketers an opportunity to impress. Meanwhile, the hosts have included 19-year-old left-arm wrist-spinner Vitel Lawes in the ODI squad for the first time as they look to strengthen their bowling attack ahead of a crucial campaign.
Mitchell Santner names the spearhead in New Zealand’s bowling unit
Ahead of the series opener, Santner expressed confidence in fast bowler Jacob Duffy, identifying him as the leader of New Zealand’s pace attack during a tour where several experienced quicks are unavailable. The New Zealand skipper believes Duffy has consistently delivered whenever given opportunities and is now ready to shoulder greater responsibility within a relatively inexperienced bowling unit.
“We’ve obviously seen how good he is for the last few years. He’s taken his opportunities, but now he’s the front man in this bowling unit. There are a couple of younger guys around him, so he’s going to be the main man here,” Santner said before the first ODI.
With New Zealand rotating their resources following a demanding Test schedule, the responsibility on Duffy has increased significantly. The right-arm seamer is expected to guide the younger fast bowlers while also leading the attack with the new ball. Santner’s comments reflect the confidence the team management has in Duffy’s ability to perform under pressure. Having impressed across formats in recent years, the pacer now has the chance to establish himself as New Zealand’s go-to fast bowler in the ODI format.
The visitors will also rely on Santner’s own experience with the ball, particularly on Guyana’s traditionally spin-friendly surface, but Duffy’s role with the new ball is expected to be central to New Zealand’s plans throughout the five-match contest.

Crucial series for West Indies in race for World Cup qualification
While New Zealand are using the series to test their squad depth, the stakes are considerably higher for the West Indies. Every match carries significant importance as the Caribbean side looks to collect valuable ranking points in the race for direct qualification to the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup.
West Indies currently sit 10th in the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, leaving them outside the automatic qualification positions. A strong performance against New Zealand could significantly improve their standing and boost their hopes of avoiding the qualification tournament.
Captain Hope will be aiming to inspire his side with both bat and leadership, while the inclusion of teenage spinner Lawes adds an exciting new dimension to the squad.
