Cuban, who bought the Mavericks in 2000, was asked by David Carr about his lowest “Laker moment” as the team’s owner. He pointed to a game early in his tenure when Dallas appeared to be on its way to ending a long drought in Los Angeles.
“Early on after I bought the team, I think it was my second year. We hadn’t beat the Lakers in LA in like 12 years or something crazy,” Cuban said, via HoopsHype.
The Mavericks appeared to have finally broken through when they built a 30-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Cuban admitted he felt the game was effectively over at that stage.
“And we were up 30 going into the fourth quarter and I’m thinking, yeah boy, we got this. Who loses a 30-point lead? I never seen that,” he recalled.
The Lakers, however, mounted a remarkable comeback, with Bryant taking control of the game offensively.
“Kobe Bryant got hot and it was over,” Cuban said.
Cuban described the collapse as the lowest point of his early experiences as Mavericks owner.
“It was the worst, it was the worst,” he added.
