The Rockies announced that they have reinstated left-hander Jose Quintana from the 60-day injured list and designated infielder Vimael Machín for assignment. They optioned righty Gabriel Hughes to Triple-A Albuquerque to make room for Quintana on their 28-man roster.

Quintana, who missed nearly four months with a left elbow sprain, will start against the Mariners on Saturday. The well-traveled 37-year-old and longtime innings eater inked a $6MM deal with the Rockies in the offseason, but he has made just nine starts. In his most recent outing, a May 24 loss to the Diamondbacks, he was crushed for six earned runs on six hits in 1 1/3 frames. Overall, Quintana has pitched to a 5.27 ERA with an unappealing 11% strikeout rate and a 9.4% walk rate in 41 frames. With another trip to free agency looming in the offseason, the one-time All-Star will try to end the season on a positive note.

Machín, 32, joined the Rockies on a minor league deal in December and received a promotion to the majors on Sept. 5. He appeared in three games and went 3 for 6, but the former Athletic and Oriole has hit a non-threatening .209/.289/.269 with two home runs in 379 major league plate appearances. While Machín has slashed a far better .288/.367/.438 with a dozen homers and seven steals in 499 PA in Albuquerque this season, his 94 wRC+ indicates his production has still been 6 percent worse than average in the Pacific Coast League.

Teams will have 48 hours to claim Machín, who still has two minor league options remaining. If he goes unclaimed, Machín will be able to reject the assignment to Albuquerque because he has been outrighted in the past.
