Mark Cuban, the former principal owner of the Dallas Mavericks and currently a minority owner, has insisted that the series officiating favored the Miami Heat during their 2006 championship.
Nearly two decades ago, Dwayne Wade had his first title with the Heat. He produced special numbers together with the dominating big man, Shaquille O’Neal.
The three-time champion clapped back at Cuban by saying that Dallas has the upper hand in the matchup regarding players, as Dirk Nowitzki produced MVP-caliber numbers every game.
“Mark stop saying that,” Wade said on his own podcast. “Mark, we beat y’all. Did we get some foul calls? Everybody gets foul calls. We can all go back and point — I can go back and point at 2011 in one of them series where Dirk had 48 [points], he had 24 free throws in one of those games. Does that mean that the referees wanted them to win? I don’t know, but it wasn’t rigged. We still had to play the game.
How the conspiracy started
Wade, a 23-year-old during that time, took pride in his craft as a young star who managed to step up in the entire series that helped them obtain the title.
“You had a young guy who was becoming a star in the NBA. Did I get a few whistles? Yes, but was I the only one attacking the basket every play? Probably so. I’m gonna get some calls, too. You’re not about to tarnish the work that I put in as a young guy, to do something that not a lot of young guys have done in this game. To say it was rigged, Mark stop that. Y’all got us, we got y’all.”
Wade got 18 free-throw attempts, while Dallas’ 7-foot offensive anchor went to the line just seven times, which led to the start of the championship controversy.
The 6-foot-4 guard produced 34.7 points, 7.8 boards, and 3.8 assists in six games in the series, as he also earned the Finals MVP. On the other hand, Nowitzki led the Mavericks with an average of 22.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game.
Wade had three titles with the Heat in 2006, 2012, and 2013. His best one was his first title, which was recognized as one of the best takeovers in NBA history. as recognized as one of the best takeovers in NBA history.
