Max Christie confirmed that there has been some discussion about a contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks but made it clear that his priority is preparing for the upcoming season.

Speaking on Locked On Mavericks, Christie was asked about the status of extension talks. The 23-year-old said negotiations have taken place but are not something he is currently focused on.

“There’s been some dialogue, but to be honest, it’s not really something I’m focused on to keep it 100,” Christie said, via HoopsHype. “I’m really focused on this season and just playing the best basketball that I can and continuing to help this team win. Extensions, if they happen, they happen, if they don’t, they don’t. I’m not really worried about that to be honest, so I just want to help this team win.”

Christie is entering the third year of a four-year, $32 million contract and has a player option for the final season. His current deal followed his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers before he was traded to Dallas during the 2024-25 season.

The wing made significant progress in his first full season with the Mavericks in 2025-26. He appeared in all 77 games, starting 68, and averaged career highs of 12.3 points and 3.2 rebounds in 29.1 minutes per game.

Christie also became a more reliable perimeter shooter. He shot 40.4% from three-point range on 5.8 attempts per game, a substantial improvement from his 36.6% mark across the Lakers and Mavericks in 2024-25.

His development came during a difficult season for Dallas. The Mavericks finished 26-56, but the organization underwent a major overhaul after the season, hiring Masai Ujiri as team president, Mike Schmitz as general manager and Dusty May as head coach.

Dallas is now building around Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and reigning Rookie of the Year, while continuing to develop a young core.

The Mavericks also added Zaccharie Risacher, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft, in an offseason trade with Atlanta. Santi Aldama, Marcus Sasser, Tarik Biberovic and several young draft picks were also added as Dallas reshaped its roster.
