The Brooklyn Nets are banking on Michael Porter Jr. to bring perimeter firepower and offensive versatility after landing him in an offseason trade with the Denver Nuggets.
The 27-year-old forward enters his new chapter with no shortage of confidence in his shooting abilities, even putting himself near the very top of the league’s marksmen.
In a recent appearance with online influencer PlaqueBoyMax, Porter didn’t hesitate when ranking himself among the NBA’s best shooters.
“Stephen Curry, that’s the only one I’m giving like a clear elite, can shoot better than me,” he said.
“There’s dudes that are on the same level. I think Klay Thompson, (Kevin Durant). If I got in the gym (with someone) like Duncan Robinson, he probably can shoot with me. Trae Young, (Damian Lillard). But I think Steph is the only one clearly better.”
Porter’s argument isn’t baseless. He’s coming off a strong campaign where he shot 50.4% overall and 39.5% from beyond the arc, reaffirming his reputation as a smooth scorer and floor spacer.
That efficiency and confidence in his long-range game were key reasons why the Nets were willing to absorb nearly $80 million left on his contract for the next two seasons.
Brooklyn hopes his shooting gravity will ease pressure on their playmakers and stretch defenses in ways they struggled with last year.
Porter, meanwhile, seems eager to prove his words on the court and establish himself as more than just Denver’s complementary scorer, but rather one of the premier shooters in the NBA today.
