Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayNo. 6 SMU ended No. 2 Pitt's unbeaten season and its 58-match home winning streak on Wednesday, winning 21-25, 25-19, 38-36, 25-22, NCAA.com reported. The Panthers had opened 14-0, and no team in the country had a longer home streak.
The Mustangs (13-2, 5-0 ACC) won in Pittsburgh by taking a marathon third set after Pitt had won the opener. Pitt fell to 14-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. No. 1 Nebraska is now the only undefeated team left.
Five Mustangs Reach Double-Digit Kills
Middle blocker Natalia Newsome led SMU with a career-high 17 kills on a .519 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis also had 17 kills, along with nine digs and four blocks. It was her 14th double-digit kill match of the season.
Outside hitter Jadyn Livings added a season-best 13 kills while hitting .435. Gabi Placide and Favor Anyanwu had 10 kills apiece. SMU's middle blockers combined for 27 kills on 47 swings, a .447 clip.
Harris and Anyanwu Anchor the Defense
Libero Victoria Harris finished with exactly 20 digs, her second 20-dig match of the year. She also served four aces, matching her career high, and sits nine digs short of 1,000 for her career.
At the net, Anyanwu had nine blocks. SMU out-blocked Pitt 12.5 to 6, its third consecutive match with at least 12 team blocks. SMU's ACC winning streak is now 14 matches, the longest active run in the league.
Babcock Sets Pitt Records in the Loss
Pitt's Olivia Babcock had 25 kills and two aces. Those totals pushed her past two program career marks in one night, with her 1,853rd kill and 176th ace.
Babcock told the Post-Gazette the loss gives Pitt a chance to reflect. She said it confirmed what the team has been told in practice, that it had not yet met a high standard in matches. SMU saw that and took advantage, she said.
Pitt's Fisher told the Post-Gazette it had been a long time since the Panthers played a nail-biting set like the third, and that the team needed to experience those emotions.
Rematch Set for Sunday
Pitt is the fourth top-10 opponent SMU has beaten this season. The Mustangs previously beat the teams ranked No. 3, No. 8 and No. 9.
The two teams meet again Sunday, Oct. 11, with SMU hosting at 3 p.m. ET on ESPN.
